Korda calls the shots to down Medvedev

Seb Korda led the American revival in Melbourne on Friday with a third round 7-6(7) 6-3 7-6(4) win over former world No.1 Daniil Medvedev.

The Russian couldn’t handle the 22-year-old Korda’s game plan on Rod Laver Arena, admitting he wasn’t good enough on the day.

“Matches like this are tough because what I can say is that he played his good level, maybe a little bit better than his good level,” Medvedev said afterwards.

“I played not at all bad, but just a little bit below what I had to do to win.”

Korda meanwhile, revealed that he had received a message from Andre Agassi after his win over Medvedev.

“Yeah, he texted me. He’s going to bed now. That’s the last thing he sent me.” Korda said.

“He’s one of the most special people in my life. We started talking during Covid in 2020. He’s been one of the biggest parts in my rise.

“Just overall just as a tennis player, as a human being. We spend a lot of time together. Yeah, he’s very special to me.”

Korda, who won the junior championship on Australia on 2018, kept Medvedev on the backfoot all evening, with an aggressive style few could match.

“I’m growing as a person, as a player. Just trying to do the right things. Just have fun, enjoy it — good things will happen,” he said.

Korda will face 10th seed, Pole Hubert Hurkacz, in the fourth round.
