Madison Keys produced the first upset of the week on opening day at the Adelaide 2 event as the former US Open finalist shocked second seed Elina Svitolina 6-2, 6-4.
The American winner, who lost the New York Grand Slam in 2017, threw down 14 aces in a victory which left Svitolina 0-2 so far in 2022.
“I’m pretty happy with that. My returning was the biggest part of my game tonight, it’s what helped me get ahead,” the winner said.
“I’m trying to make myself live in the moment a little more. Last year I got a little too wrapped up in winning and losing and wasn’t loving playing tennis as much.”
Last week’s Melbourne quarter-finalist Viktorija Golubic lost her opener to Czech sixth seed Marketa Vondrousova 5-7 6-4 6-3
