Jabeur earmarks part of prize haul for Palestinians

Ons Jabeur will donate part of her prize money at this week’s WTA Finals to aid Palestinian refugees forced to flee their home due the Israeli invasion.

The seventh-ranked Tunisian, a treble Grand Slam finalist, made the vow after a group victory in Cancun over Wimbledon winner Marketa Vondrousova 6-4, 6-3.

A tearful Jabeur could not hold it together when she spoke of the Israeli war in the Middle East which is supported by the US and Britain.

“I am very happy with the win, but I haven’t been happy lately,” she said.

“The situation in the world doesn’t make me happy,” Jabeur added as she broke down in tears, before composing herself enough to talk about the Israel-Hamas conflict.

“It’s very tough seeing children, babies dying every day.”

The Arab breakthrough player added: “It’s heartbreaking, so I’ve decided to donate part of my prize money to help the Palestinians.

“It’s supposed to be about tennis, but it’s very frustrating looking at videos every day.

“I’m sorry – it’s not a political message, it’s just humanity. I want peace in this world and that’s it.”
