Jabeur claims first Asian title in Ningbo

Treble Grand Slam finalist Ons Jabeur on Saturday completed a breakthrough WTA title in Asia as she defeated Diana Schnaider 6-2, 6-1 Ningbo.

The Tunisian ranked seventh in the world added a second trophy this season to her resume after winning last spring in Charleston.

Jabeur, who has lost the last two Wimbledon finals and went down in the US Open title match last season, now owns five career trophies – including her first on hardcourt earned here .

She won the final at the Chinese city halfway between Hong Kong and Beijing by defeating Shnaider, who was playing her first WTA final, in 78 minutes.

Jabeur made the right choice after taking a late wild card into the tournament as the WTA returned to Asia for the first time since the pandemic and the former player Peng Shuai’s mystery disappearance.

Jabeur came good as she played her fourth hardcourt final after going down to defeat in Moscow, Chicago and New York.

Jabeur, aged 29 to the 19 of former university tennis player Schnaider. ended with 18 winners to 10 unforced errors, saving all three break points she faced.
