Italian tennis officials are confident the Rome clay court event will take place in September.

Federation president Angelo Binaghi said yesterday he believes the ATP and WTA events can go ahead safely.

“I think that, barring major upheavals, we are going to reorganise the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in September, between the middle and the end of the month,” Mr Binaghi said.

“They tell me, especially the Romans, that it is an extraordinary season, the best time to play tennis.”

This year’s event was scheduled to start at the Foro Italico on May 11.

Mr Binaghi said he was sent to meet Italian Sports Minister Vincenzo Spadafora ‘soon’ to discuss ways to “allow the public enjoy this great event”.

The tournament may struggle to find a suitable date as the French Open is due to begin on September 20.
