Stan Wawrinka may have been inadvertently short-changed during Monday’s third-round loss at the Shanghai Masters due to a mis-calling of the score.
The veteran Swiss who has not put back-to-back wins together since the US Open 13 months ago, lost 6-7 (6), 7-6 (4), 6-3 to Italy’s Fabio Cobolli.
Bit the outcome was possibly shaded due to a massive and uncharacteristic mistake from umpire Carlos Bernardes.
The veteran Brazilian who will complete his career in the chair at the end of the season in a month, made his grave errors in the second game of the third set.
After possibly being distracted after an internal communication between points on the radio, he called the score 30-0 to Cobolli instead of the correct 15-all.
As it turns out, three-time Grand Slam winner Wawrinka lost the game to 15 in the only service break of the match.
Despite the huge clanger, neither of the payers, nor their coaching boxes nor Bernardes himself noticed the fatal mistake,
With a lead of 2-0, Cobolli went on to take the victory in two and a half hours without anyone ever knowing what the mistake might have done to the chances of 39-year-old Swiss Wawrinka.
