Injured Zverev fears his open is closed

Alexander Zverev is already worried that his US Open participation is in doubt due to his serious ankle injury suffered in the Roland Garros semi-finals this month.

The German was forced to leave the court in a wheelchair after rolling his ankle in the second set and underwent surgery to set the bone.

With Wimbledon already a non-starter for the ATP No. 2, the chances of fronting up in New York from August 29 also seem dicey.

“I don’t know if it will be at the US Open,” Zverev told German tabloid Bild.

“I would have to play a couple of tournaments before to get there well, at the moment I haven’t set a date.

“I don’t want to play immediately after I recover, if I go to the US Open it’s not to spend a couple of rounds, but to win the title.

“I will not return until I am in shape.”
