Jannik Sinner quit early in the second set against Alexander Bublik on Friday at the ATP event in Halle to hand the Kazakh his ticket into the semi-finals
Fourth seed Sinner ended his tournament debut in northwest Germany in the worst possible way as he had to stop play trailing 7-5, 2-0 due to an apparent thigh or hip problem.
The Italian coached by Darren Cahill received a medical timeout after losing the opening set; the abbreviated match lasted for just under an hour in a stadium constructed as a mock-up of WImbledon’s Centre Court.
The pair were facing off for the second time in as many weeks, with Sinner winning in straight sets in the second round of ‘s-Hertogenbosch.
The Italian was playing his ninth quarter-final of the season and now stands 5-4 at that level.
Bublik struck six aces against his hampered opponent, breaking on all three of his chances.
