Emma Raducanu was bringing little hope into her Indian Wells opening match against Danka Kovinic as the Brit confirmed she will be carrying a wrist injury into the Thursday start.

The miracle 2021 US Open winner is also just over the tonsillitis which forced her to retire before last week’s new WTA Austin event in the Texan capital.

“The same issue that I had last year has started to flare back up,” she told the BBC. “It’s something that has just come back, so I’m trying to be as cautious as possible.

“I think we always play through pain and it’s just a matter of how much can you take – I’m looking forward to hopefully being out there tomorrow.”

The No. 62 Kovinic ranks 15 spots higher than Raducanu, who briefly made it into the Top 10.
