Iga increases her win streak to 31 straight

Igs Swiatek stretched her current hot streak to 31 straight match wins on Saturday as the top seed reached the French Open fourth round.

The Pole powered past Danka Kovinic 6-3, 7-5 in her closest match so far of a runaway tournament to extend the longest victory run on the WTA since 2013.

She is bidding for a sixth straight title this season where she now owns 40 victories. Her trophy haul includes Masters 1000 success in Doha, Indian Wells, Miami and Rome, with lower-level Stuttgart tucked in.

Swiatek has not lost a set all week in Paris, where she won the 2020 COVID edition.

The world No. 1 admitted she had to slow her pace as she faced another big hitter in Kovinic from Montenegro. The pair traded breaks in the second set before Swiatek put it away on her second match point.

The 95th-ranked Kovinic showed a burst of form as she won 16 of 20 points to earn a 5-4 lead in the second set, only to see Swiatek break in the 11th game and serve it out in the 12th.

“I wanted to play aggressively,” Swiatek said. “But her big returns were hard to control at full speed.

“I had to play with a little less risk and try to be more consistent in the rallies; she did a good job of defending.

“It was hard for me to see where she was going to serve. I like to make a fast start, That means I can play more furiously later in the set.”

The 20-year-old winner has now reached the second week at every edition she has played here and won 17 of her 19 matches at the tournament.
