Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz earned a victory at the Indian Wells Masters which sent Roger Federer to a rare exit from the ranking Top 10.
Hurkacz – last man to defeat the Swiss in their Wimbledon quarter-final in July — advanced to the Californian fourth round through a 6-3, 6-2 thrashing of Frances Tiafoe.
Federer has not played since that loss due to continuing knee injury worries. The Hurkacz win will push 20-time Grand Slam winner Federer out of the elite in next Monday’s rankings.
Federer has played only sporadically since January, 2020, since undergoing three knee procedures, with a hope of returning to the courts at age 40 for January’s Australian tennis summer.
Federer last left the Top 10 in January, 2017, due to injury.
But before that, the Swiss was a regular among the first group dating to October, 2002.
