Iga Swiatek will have to carry Polish Olympic weight all on her own after Monday’s confirmation that compatriot Hubert Hurkacz will not be fit when the Paris Games start on Friday.

The world No. 7 underwent knee surgery after slipping in the Wimbledon second round against Arthur Fils on July 4 and quitting the match at 6-all in the fourth set.

Hurkacz immediately returned to Poland for medical evaluation and underwent surgery.

He had hoped to somehow be ready for the Olympics but was unable to gain fitness.

His absence cuts Polish tennis medal chances by nearly two-thirds with only the Swiatek singles and doubles remaining viable options.

The country’s top pair had been due to compete in their individual singles and doubles and together in the mixed.
