Former Italian Grand Slam winner Adriano Panatta has predicted that compatriot Jannik Sinner will eventually mean the end of the Novak Djokovic career.
The 22-year-old Sinner from Italy’s German-speaking northern Alto Adige region won the ATP Finals last month in Turin over 24-time major winner Djokovic.
And the 14-year-age gap between the young gun and the old pro are what Panatta says will make the ultimate call on Djokovic.
“If Sinner beats him two or three more times in 2024 – he has done it twice this past season, in Turin and a week later in the Davis Cup Finals which Italy won – it would become the nightmare of Djokovic, leading him into retirement.
Panatta added: “History teaches and often repeats itself: (Bjorn) Borg left with the arrival of (John) McEnroe and then McEnroe retired when (Boris) Becker arrived,” Panatta – only man to defeat Borg at Roland Garros – told Italy’s RAI.
