Grass-loving Swiss Belinda Bencic rolled into the WTA Berlin final on Saturday with a 7-5, 6-4 defeat of Alize Cornet.
Bencic will be competing in her fourth career final on grass; she won the Eastbourne trophy in 2015 on the surface.
The WTA No. 12 said there is no place she would rather be right now and will carry confidence into Wimbledon which begins a week from Monday.
“Playing the final will give me confidence for Wimbledon, no matter if I win or lose,” she said. “It’s important to know you are playing well.”
Like eight-time Swiss Wimbledon winner Roger Federer who also cites grass as his preferred surface, Bencic is pleased to be competing well in her favourite part of the season.
She added that the two-week instead of three-week gap between the end of Roland Garros and the start of Wimbledon is understandable this season due to COVID scheduling problems.
“It’s too bad they had to take a week away from the grass but that is how it goes, I’m just trying to play as much as possible on it.
“I love the surface, so why not use it.
“I just want to come fresh to Wimbledon, this year we are all adjusting as best we can.”
Bencic broke France’s Cornet four times while saving eight of the ten break points she faced. in a win lasting one and three-quarter hours at the new WTA calendar stop.
