A trio of major champions with six Grand Slam singles titles between them, rolled over opponents on Monday to start the WTA Doha tournament with straight-set success.

Three-time major titleholder Angelique Kerber prevailed over Turkish qualifier Cagla Büyükakcay 6-4, 6-2, to next face Anett Kontaveit, who knocked out seventh-seeded Australian Open finalist Jennifer Brady 6-1, 6-2..

Kerber, three weeks off of an Open first-round defeat, trailed 0-4 in the opening set but won the next seven games to take charge of her No. 179 opponent.

Roland Garros and Wimbledon winner Garbine Muguruza beat Russian Veronika Kudermetova 6-2, 7-6(4), January’s Abu Dhabi finalist.

2017 French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko, a wildcard entry, put out Kiki Bertens with the loss of just two games in 57 minutes.
