Former Olympic mixed doubles gold medallist Victoria Azarenka has become the latest major name to skip the Tokyo Games with the London 2012 winner pulling the plug.
“I would like to inform everyone that I have made the very difficult decision to not play in the Tokyo Olympics,” the US-based 31-year-old from Belarus tweeted.
“I have many amazing memories winning the gold while competing and representing Belarus in previous Games.
“But with all the challenges we are facing as it relates to the pandemic, I know in my heart this is the right decision for myself and the team.
The mother of one who last competed in the Wimbledon second round will now aim for Paris 2024.
Azarenka joins distinguished company on the Olympic sidelines including Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem, Serena Williams and Angelique Kerber.
