MOVERS AND SHAKERS IN THIS WEEK’S RANKINGS

Arriving coach-less and ranked 72 in the world, Nick Kyrgios could hardly believe how he blew threw a list of world class opposition that included tRafa Nadal, Stan Wawrinka and John Isner in Acapulco last week.

The 23-year-old then went loco in Acapulco to outclass Alexander Zverev 6-3 6-4 to claim his fifth career title.

The journey though, was bumpy: he had rows with umpires and with fans, and he angered 17-times Grand Slam champion Nadal.

But, Kyrgios described by John McEnroe as the greatest talent he has seen in the last 10 years, stayed on message – even though that message seemed at times, hard for many to stomach.

His win in Acapulco rocketed up the ATP rankings when they were released today, up a massive 39 places to No.33.

After driving Zverev loco on Saturday, Kyrgios wore a huge sombrero to celebrate his win. He said he might need to “be more professional” to rise back up the rankings.

By all accounts the antics that angered so many during the Mexican Open didn’t harms those prospects and once can only hope he can temper some the extremities of his topsy-turvy behavioural patterns to allow some of that ‘natural’ talent to come through.

The other ‘big’ mover, not unexpectedly, was Roger Federer, who jumped three places to fourth after his 100th title in the Dubai event.

Stefanos Tsitsipas, the beaten finalist as Federer made history in Dubai also inched up the rankings. The Greek climbed one place into the top 10.

Novak Djokovic took the week off but remains a long way clear at the top, though both Nadal and Zverev gained a handful of points in Mexico.

Guido Pella, who won his first ATP title in Sao Paulo on Sunday also moved up. The Argentine has the same number of points as Kyrgios but is ranked one spot lower at 34.
