The teenaged tussle between new British Grand Slam champion Emma Raducanu and Canada’s Leylah Fernandez at the US Open turned traditional TV viewership figures on their head in the US.

Ratings for the final showed that without the Federer Factor, and with Rafael Nadal also missing through injury, the presence of Novak Djokovic was not enough to maintain the audience status quo.

ESPN ratings showed that the women;’s final outdrew the men’s battle between Novak and eventual champion Daniil Mdevedev finished second in the number game.

The Saturday women’s showdown was watched by 37 per cent more Americans than Naomi Osaka and Victoria Azarenka in 2020.

2021 viewership hit an average of 2.44 million viewers, the highest at the Open since 2015; Djokovic and Medvedev drew 2.05 million.
