Coco Gauff won her 15th straight match of the season on Thursday to set up a quarter-final at the WTA Beijing event, with the US Open champion maintaining her perfect form over the last few months.
The 19-year-old who is running away with her debut in the Chinese capital, reached the last eight over Veronika Kudermetova 7-6(5), 6-2 and has now surpassed Iga Swiatek with the longest win streak of the season.
Gauff last lost a match in August in the Montreal quarter-final when she was eliminated by US compatriot Jessica Pegula.
She then picked up hardcourt titles in Cincinnati and won the Open, her first Grand Slam honour; she has now won 21 of 22 matches.
Gauff will be playing her 11th quarter-final of the season and will take on sixth seed Maria Sakkari, who beat China’s Wang Xinyu to advance 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.
“The end of this season for me, especially once you’re qualified (for WTA Finals in Mexico) I consider it bonus matches,” Gauff said.
“Today I was telling myself to try to hit above 110, 115 (mph) as much as I could, be more aggressive.
“In the long run … I feel like now that the pressure is off, now that the Grand Slam season is over and I’m qualified.
“I think this could be a good week to continue to work on things I need to work on. Today I think I approached the match like that. I wish I did it earlier.”
