Gauff guts Putintseva in solid Rome rout

Coco Gauff laid on a 6-0, 6-1 hammering of Yulia Putintseva on Thursday to crash into the third round of the Rome Masters.

The American ranked fifth needed just an hour to get her job on court done at the Foro Italico; the victory made up for a third-round exit last week in Madrid.

Gauff had 29 winners to just one for her outclassed opponent ranked 51st.

The 19-year-old winner is working with a new coach and trying to lift her clay performances in time for the French Open starting on May 28.

She was glad to put the Madrid defeat in the rearview mirror.

“It was a tough loss for me. It just wasn’t my day, my game, not how I like to appear on court,” she said.

“I’ve been working really hard since then. I’m feeling good. I’m practicing a lot better.

“I feel like I’m just ready to build myself back up into what I know I can be.”
