Gauff clashes with the chair in contentious win

Coco Gauff argued a linecall in vain for five minutes before settling down to secure a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 on Wednesday, securing a place in her second career quarter-final at the WTA Dubai 1000 tournament.

Last year’s losing semi-finalist to Iga Swiatek brought the curtain down on an 11-match win streak for opponent Karolina Pliskova, with the Czech former world No. 1 losing for the first time since the Australian Open first round.

Gauff and the chair umpire got into a heated discussion over a disputed call from the electronic system, which was ove-rruled and applied from the chair.

After wasting breath trying to explain her side of the second-set issue, Gauff put the matter aside and continued onto the third-round win.

“Maybe I dragged that on longer than I needed to, but I didn’t want it to be the turning point of the match,” the teenaged third seed said.

“It was just one point, things like that happen in tennis. Everyone makes mistakes.”

Pliskova played the final here in 2015 but has gone down the last five times she has faced Top 10 opponents.
