Qualifier Cristian Garin extended his domination over Casper Ruud, beating the Norwegian for the third time in four meetings on Sunday to reach the fourth round of the Indian Wells Masters.
The Chilean outsider ranked 97 posted a 6-4, 7-6 (2) upset over Norway’s world No. 4 in less than two hours.
Victory for the clay-bred South American marked the first time Garin has defeated a Top 10 player on hardcourt
Garin reached the third round here in 2021, his only previous appearance.
The underdog said he had to play the only way he knows against an elite opponent.
“”He’s a player that I admire. I was aggressive and went to the net – that’s the only way I can beat these guys.
Casper can be dangerous when you give him time, and that’s what I tried to take away.”
