Qualifier Emil Ruusuvuori broke new ground with his first-ever ATP semi-final thanks to a 6-3, 6-1 defeat on Friday of the last Kazakh standing in Nur-Sultan.

The No. 98 Finn dispatched Mikhail Kukushkin in 83 minutes, breaking the local four times.

The 21-year-old who qualified into an ATP field for the third week in a row here, will bid for the final on Saturday when he plays Adrian Mannarino.

The Frenchman earned his spot 6-1, 6-4 over American Mackenzie Mcdonald.

Ruusuvuori becomes the first Finnish player to reach an ATP semi since Jarkko Nieminen in Kuala Lumpur in September 2014.

At the bottom of the draw, Frances Tiafoe will try and duplicate his US Open defeat of John Millman as the pair meet in the final four..

Tiafoe moved into his first semi-final in two and a half years as he defeated  Egor Gerasimov of Belarus 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-5; fourth-seeded Australian Millman beat Tommy Paul of the US with a comeback from a set down, winning 6-7(5), 6-4, 7-6(5).

Millman spent nearly three hours on his victory, saving a pair of match points and battling back from 0-5 down in the final-set tiebreaker.

The 64th-ranked Tiafoe played his last ATP semi in May, 2018, in Estoril..
