Flawless Swiatek sweeps aside Bencic in Adelaide

Reigning Roland Garros champion Iga Swiatek cruised to a straight sets win in the Adelaide International  6-2,6-2 over Swiss Belinda Bencic.

This was the 19 year old Pole’s second career title.

Swiatek started powerfully and kept her momentum going throughout, twice breaking the Bencic  in each set.

The Swiss served eight double faults, four in a row in one game alone handing her opponent a gift wrapped present.

Former world No. 4 Bencic showed little of her best tennis and had no answer to Swiatek’s powerful forehand winner.

After the match she said “Tennis can be a little bit brutal. You can have a very good week and still end up losing and having a bitter feeling”

“I didn’t manage to find a way today but I think I had a great week and I really enjoyed playing here.”

Swiatek was near perfect throughout, hitting 22 winners and making a miserly six unforced errors – three in each set.

The Polish teenager told the crowd in her victory speech “I appreciated being able to play in front of spectators during the Australian tournaments, particularly in front of a capacity crowd for the Adelaide final”

“It’s been an amazing time here in Australia,”
