Felix Auger-Aliassime lost his fifth clay match this season as the Canadian coached by Toni Nadal went down 7-6(3), 3-6, 7-5 to Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti in the first round at the ATP event in Lyon.
Auger-Aliassime has struggled to improve under his new mentor, taken on for the spring clay season which culminates in Roland Garros which starts on May 30.
Musetti, 19, needed just over two and three-quarter hours to dismiss the seventh seed, taking revenge for a second-round loss last month in Barcelona.
“We played a really intense match, a real fight,” the winner said. “I learned from the loss to Felix in Barcelona.
“It’s a good start and I hope to continue like that.”
The 82nd-ranked Musetti, an Acapulco semi-finalist this spring, next plays American Seb Korda
“It’s going to be really tough, he’s one of the best NextGen ATP right now,” Musetti said.
“I know him so well from juniors, even if we never played each other. He’s a fighter. I’ll do my best to get to the quarter-finals.”
