Roger Federer will return to Wimbledon on Tuesday two years after his final appearance as the All England Club lays on a ceremony honouring the eight-time champion.
The 41-year-old Swiss who retired with a knee injury last September, had made the venue his spiritual home in the game he once dominated.
“I’m pleased to say that Roger will be with us tomorrow and we will have a special celebratory moment on Centre Court before play starts just to honour him as the man holding the most gentlemen’s singles titles here at Wimbledon,” Wimbledon boss Sally Bolton said on Monday.
“We’ll have a moment just to celebrate his achievements and to say thank you for all the memories.”
Federer will have to get used to post-career adulation: he was similarly feted last month at the grass event in Halle Germany, which he won 10 times.
Fellow tennis icon Serena Williams, pregnant with a second child, was invited to the club but opted out, though she was in Europe in recent weeks on an extended holiday.
