More than 630,000 fans attended the US Open, organisers have announced – almost back to full capacity for the first time since 2019.
The total attendance for the tournament was 631,134 for the two weeks, 85 per cent of the 2019 attendance of 737,919. No fans were allowed at the 2020 event because of the covid pandemic.
Covid restrictions have been attributed to the slighty fewer numbers with fans unable to travel from outside the US and ticket holders required to be vaccinated.
Prize money was up to $57.5 million, with a planned redistribution downwards that led to $75,000 for the first round losers.
The singles champions received $2.5 million each.
