FAA backs up Basel title with a second trophy

Felix Auger-Aliassime became the first Canadian in more than a decade to back up an ATP title as he defeated Hubert Hurkacz 7-6 (3). 7-6 (5) on Sunday to win the Swiss Indoors again.

FAA duplicated the feat of countryman Milos Raonic, who won San Jose back–to-back in 2011-2012.

The 19th-ranked Canadian claimed the fifth title of his career from 15 finals; he took one and three-quarter hours to defeat Poland’s Hurkacz, who is fighting for a place in next month’s eight-man ATP Finals in Turin.

The title win – his first in a year after a run of 2023 injuries – came as a massive relief to the No. 19, won finished with 13 aces, 40 winners and just nine unforced errors..

“I’m back, I let my racquet talk for me,” the winner said, “I’ve always had the conviction that I’m a top player.

“But there were many doubts this yer with three injuries. I’m happy to prove to everyone that I still belong.

“I never doubted that but it’s good to confirm it on the court.”

Auger-Aliassime said that managing his injuries – including a knee problem – made life complex in 2023.

“There were a lot of tough times, there were challenges being away from the court.

“It’s been a tricky year overall, but this feels extra special – even more than last year.”

He has now won 10 consecutive Basel matches. FAA never faced a break point during the final while Hurkacz saved all five against his serve.
