Former Andy Murray mentor Brad Gilbert is riding to the rescue of Coco Gauff, with the California coaching guru now working with the US No. 1.
The teenaged Gauff, ranked seventh on the WTA, has long worked with her father but with her results stalling ,seems to have decided that an outside viewpoint is needed.
Gauff characterised her strategy shakeup as more of a “rebuilding.”
Gilbert, a TV commentator, previously worked with Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick – helping them to Grand Slam titles – while also coaching Murray, Kei Nishikori and Sam Querrey.
“I definitely do feel like I’m in a rebuilding period. I’m trying to hit the next gear of my game,” Gauff said at the start of this week’s Washington ATP-WTA event.
“I feel like I have the foundation in my game. Now it’s building around that, it’s building the house, I guess.
“I have the land and I need to build the house on top of it, make it as extravagant and big and pretty as possible. That’s a good way to put it. I never thought about it like that.”
The 19-year-old seems ready to take fresh advice from former No. 4 Gilbert..
I’m really open to learning from the game and learning from people and getting different perspectives,” she said.
“My team have done a good job, so I really feel we’re all on one page and one (agreement).”
