Alexander Zverev has laid down the law to German Davis Cup coaches – he won’t be onside for the November teams event final in Madrid.
The decision for the Olympic gold medalist means that the ATP No. 5 can take time to decompress from a frantic tennis season.
Zverev told German tabloid Bild: I am also human and I need a vacation from time to time.
“We tennis players play non-stop from January to October, so this time I will not play in November.”
While he may be out for the count this season, Zverev did not rule out a return in the future if the abbreviated, Spanish-run version of the event ever goes back to the century-old classic format.
“I hope to come back in the future, when the old format with home advantage and weekend playoffs recovers, then I’ll be there.”
