Novak Djokovic on Saturday cut his preparation for the French Open to the bone by withdrawing from next week’s Madrid Masters.
The dissatisfied world No. 1 will presumably enter the May 26 start of Roland Garros after playing only two preliminary events.
The 36-year-old lost to Casper Ruud last weekend in Monte Carlo and will almost certainly compete in Rome next month, where conditions are similar to those in Paris.
The Djokovic pullout hands Jannik Sinner the top seeding in the Spanish capital, whose courts play fast due to its location above sea level.
Djokovic has spent a troubled 2024 season and has yet to win a title while still maintaining a healthy lead over Sinner in the rankings.
