The thought of Roger Federer bothering to play the Djokovic family’s new ATP event is laughable – but that has not stopped outspoken Djorjde Djokovic from half-issuing an invite to the Swiss icon.
The family of world No. 1 Novak, whose father has continually insulted Federer for some years, now finds itself the owner of the minor 250 clay event which begins in a week..
It’s the second bite of the management cherry for the Serbs, who owned a Belgrade tournament for four editions from 2009 before it evaporated.
TD Djordje Djokovic told Serb media of his fantasy of getting 20-time Grand Slam champion Federer into the local entry-level field.
“We have not invited Roger this year because we had to take into consideration our budget; we could not afford to spend all of our money on one player, he told the Wish & Go podcast.
“We hope to see Federer in Belgrade in the coming years; we will invite him next year, I can promise that.”
