Unvaxxed Novak Djoovic on Thursday bowed to reality and withdrew from the US Open four days before Monday’s start.
The Serb whose refusal to get jabbed for COVID resulted in immigration detention in Australia and bans from playing in four 2022 Masters 1000 events held in North America, will sit out the major back in the Balkans.
“Novak is a great champion and it is very unfortunate that he will be unable to compete at the 2022 US Open, as he is unable to enter the country due to the federal government’s vaccination policy for non-U.S.citizens,” said tournament TD Stacey Allaster.
” We look forward to welcoming Novak back at the 2023 US Open.”
Djokovic fell foul of the regulation still in place that foreign visitors can only enter the US if they have been double-jabbed.
