Novak Djokovic’s supernatural tendencies are rising to the surface once again at the Australian Open, with the Serb revealing he and a “special tree” have had a mystical relationship for years.
The gluten-free Serb whose fanaticism for training rituals, diets and procedures have kept him at the top of tennis, refused to provide more details, saying only the greenery was located in the city’s sprawling Botanical Gardens across the river from the tennis complex.
The 36-year-old tried to explain his “connection” with the tree after reaching the Grand Slam third round despite not playing or feeling his best.
“There’s one particular tree that I’ve been having a special relationship with in the last 15 years,” he said.
“I love every corner of botanical gardens. I think it’s an incredible treasure for Melbourne to have such a park and nature in the middle of the city.”
Djokovic then went quiet on any further information about his apparent “secret weapon.”
“That particular tree, – I cannot reveal which one, I’ll try to keep it discreet for myself when I’m there to have my own time.
“I like to ground myself and connect with that old friend. I got connected with that tree. I just liked it. I liked its roots and the trunks and branches and everything.
“I started climbing it years ago. That’s it. I just have a connection.”
