Delpo gives up on his US Open comeback dream

Hope has drained away for Juan Martin del Potro, with the injured Argentine giving up on his dream of somehow playing a final career match at the US open.

The Argentine who turns 35 in September has had a decade of injury drama between wrists and abdominals and has been hoping for years to somehow return to the ATP courts.

But after all but giving up his career four years ago, the 2009 US Open champion has called off his futile effort.

“My desire to return to a court as special as that of the US Open had me excited,” he posted on social media.

“I tried by all means to achieve it, but my body does not (allow) me 100 per cent to feel comfortable.

“The pain I feel does not allow me to focus still on a comeback. I will continue looking for the best alternatives to recover my quality of life.”
