Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut stunned top seed Daniil Medvedev in Miami on Wednesday night, cruising to a 6-4, 6-2 win to seal his fourth ATP Masters 1000 semi-final spot.
Bautista Agut, the No. 7 seed for the tournament, found some of his best tennis in years to defeat the fancied Russian in 92 minutes.
The pair traded serves in the opening set before Bautista Agut broke through at 5-4.
The Spaniard then drew an unforced error from the Russian, saved break point of his own before tasking out the set.
The second set was even more uncomfortable for Medvedev. Bautista took an early lead and never let his opponent settle.
“I want to give Daniil all the credit, I know he is one of the best players in the world,” Bautista Agut said.
“He’s been winning a lot of matches, he’s No. 2 in the world, so I’m very happy and proud about how I played today. I think I showed a great level on the court.”
Bautista Agut will face Jannik Sinner in the semis. The pair last met two weeks ago in Dubai, but the Spaniard will be eyeing revenge for the 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 defeat.
“Jannik is playing great… I have to say he will be one of the best players in the world. I want to enjoy another good match and be happy about playing in the semi-finals,” he said.
