Cilic crushes Medvedev’s No. 1 hopes

Marin Cilic produced his best Grand Slam showing in nearly half a decade on Monday with his 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 defeat of Daniil Medvedev, knocking the second seed out of contention for a return to the top ATP ranking.

Cilic’s fourth-round thrashing at the French Open means that Medvedev cannot take back to ATP summit form Novak Djokovic in the immediate future.

He would have had to reach the final in order to pull off the return.

2014 US Open champion Cilic unleashed his big game with devastating results in less than two hours to reach a quarter-final in Paris since his last in 2018.

“It was an absolutely fantastic match from the first point,” the Croat said.

“I enjoy the atmosphere, I enjoy the night sessions. I played incredible tennis

“This was one of the best matches of my career.”

Medvedev failed to reach the last-eight place he finally achieved in Paris a year ago after suffering through four first-round defeats.

Cilic will bid for his first semi-final at a major since Australia, 2018, when he plays Andrey Rublev, who advanced when Jannik Sinner quit with a left leg injury trailing 1-6, 6-4, 2-0.

The Italian had been carrying the problem over the weekend and was hampered by a heavy taping on his leg.
