China saddles Czechs with 2-0 defeat

China hung a 2-0 loss on the Czech Republic on Saturday in Perth at the United Cup with reigning Wimbledon winner Marketa Vondrousova feeling the heat in her opening match of the 2024 season.

The Grand Slam trophyholder lost 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 to 15th-ranked Zheng Qinwen, who claimed the first two titles of her career last season.

In the men’s rubber, Zhang Zhizhen constructed a comeback to blow past Jiri Lehecka 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 after more than two hours.

The Czech looked to be feeling the pressure in 32 Celsius conditions as he bowed to opponent “Triple Zed,” who approached the Top 50 for the first time in 2023.

I’m so happy that I controlled the emotions well after losing the first set,” the No. 58 said.

“I didn’t get upset and kept my calm. That was impressive for me.”

Zheng took her unexpected thrashing of a reigning Grand Slam winner in stride.

“It was just a normal match for me, it doesn’t matter who I face.

“I’m happy with the win and excited for my team.”
