Brooksby wins ATP rookie award

American youngster Jenson Brooksby has been named Newcomer of the Year in the 2021 ATP Awards.

Brooksby has become the first American to win the award since Taylor Fritz in 2016.

“I am extremely grateful to win the ATP Newcomer Player of the Year Award. Thank you to all the players who voted for me. It means a lot,” Brooksby said.

Only three Americans have achieved the feat, the other being Andy Roddick in 2001.

Brooksby had a standout 2021, beating Felix Auger Aliassime at the Citi Open in Washington and reaching the fourth round of the US Open.

He beat Aslan Karatsev and Fritz before losing to Novak Djokovic in four sets and reached two ATP Tour semi-finals and won three Challenger titles.

“It was definitely a fun season and I would like to thank the fans for cheering me throughout the year,”Brooksby said.
