Boris Becker’s past criminal record and ongoing ban from the UK is absolutely no problem for Holger Rune, coached since the autumn by the six-time Grand Slam winner.
The 56-year-old German who served less than a year’s jail time in London after being convicted in 2017 on fraudulent bankruptcy charges was released a year ago – but is not now not allowed entry to Britain.
Even if it means his new mentor will miss next summer’s Wimbledon fortnight, the eighth-ranked Rune is more than pleased with his selection of a coach.
“Whatever he’s doing off the court, I don’t need to have an opinion on that because I hired him to coach me, not to do anything else,” the Dane said as he plans the start of his New Year Australian tennis campaign.
“He’s a great guy. He’s a really good man. I think if people (make mistakes) about that.
“He has a great heart and he’s a great coach.”
Rune, who played last month’s ATP Finals for the firts tiem under Becker’s tutelage, added:
“He helped me a lot because I had the tough middle of the season with everything. He came and we started improving again
“He’s a great guy, a great coach, I’m excited for the future.”
