Next week’s Dubai WTA event suffered a double blow on Thursday with pullout decisions from Naomi Osaka and Barbora Krejcikova.

The pair of Grand Slam champions gave their regrets to the event four days before the first ball was struck.

Czech Krejcikova, the 2021 Roland Garros winner, was to have defended her Dubai title from 12 months ago.

Four-time winner at the major Osaka, is stepping light back into a pregnancy comeback but has shown little promise so far a month into her effort.

The 12th-ranked Krejcikova beat No. 1 Iga Swiatek in the 2023 Dubai final but is now bothered by a back problem

“It’s with a heavy heart that I announce my withdrawal from the Dubai tournament,” she said in a statement.

“This decision wasn’t easy, especially given my fond memories and anticipation to compete again.

“However, my back injury requires further healing time. But I am committed to returning stronger next year.”

Osaka gave no solid reason for her own withdrawal: “I’m really sorry that I have to withdraw.

“I’ve loved playing in Dubai in previous years, and I want to wish the tournament organisers a successful event in 2024.”
