Matteo Berrettini has defied the odds after a recent injury and will make his start as scheduled at the Indian Wells Masters.

Italy’s 2021 Wimbledon finalist was forced to retire with a leg problem in Acapulco last week against Holger Rune in the quarter-finals.

There had been fears he would miss this week’s Masters start in the Californian desert – but they have proved to be unfounded.

“Luckily I feel good and my leg is responding to all the tests and training sessions carried out these days,” the No. 23 told Ubitennis.

“In general, I am happy that the leg (was nothing serious).

“Now the objective is to accumulate matches and hours of play and try to return home with as many games as possible – I can’t even ask for much right now.”

Berrettini will start in the second round after a bye against Japan’s Taro Daniel.
