Fifth seed Matteo Berrettini fell short in a bid to reach the fourth round of the Indian Wells Masters for the first time, going down to a 6-4, 6-3 defeat on Tuesday against Taylor Fritz.
The Italian was knocked out in 83 minutes by the American journeyman, who broke four times in the third-round encounter.
Fritz will aim for the quarter-finals in the next round when he plays another Italian seed, Jannik Sinner, who advanced on a walkover as American John Isner withdrew to return home to his pregnant wife.
Fritz, ranked 39th, defeated Wimbledon finalist Berrettini in their only other meeting, a Davis Cup rubber in Madrid two years ago.
Since that win, the American has lost six matches in a row against Top 10 opponents.
