Berrettini a Wimbledon threat with second Queen’s title

Italian Matteo Berrettini established himself as a strong Wimbledon threat with his second straight title on grass at Queen’s Club on Sunday.

The All England Club finalist who missed three months this spring due to hand surgery, notched his second grass trophy in eight days with a 7-5, 6-4 defeat of Serb Filip Krajinovic.

Berrettini has earned four of his seven career titles on grass, lifting his most recent with 14 aces after 94 minutes.

“There are so many emotions,” the winner said. “The last thing I expected was to come back from surgery and win two titles in a row.

“Defending my title here at one of the most prestigious tournaments we have. I don’t want to cry….

“Most of the job is thanks to my team and my family. I just can’t believe it.”

The ATP No. 10 will find his ranking dropping this month as a result of Wimbledon being stripped of ranking points in a political brawl with the ATP over its ban on Russian and Belarus players.

Berrettini is now riding a nine-match win streak since making his return with a trophy performance last weekend in Stuttgart.

He stands a solid 32-6, with wins in 20 of his past 21 matches on the lawns.

“I arrived in Stuttgart and was not feeling great,” Berrettini said. “I was not hitting the ball how I wanted and I was like ‘Guys, I think it is going to be tough’. But it has gone pretty well!”
