Boris Becker has issued some no-nonsense advice to tennis wild child NIck Kyrgios – get yourself a coach.
The 52-year-old German tennis icon told coaching website Top Level Tennis that the Australian who has dismissed coaches as a waste of money could likely benefit from a consistent, steadying hand on his team.
“The role of coach for a tennis player (has been) a little bit underestimated,” Becker, former mentor for No. 1 Novak Djokovic, said.
“I’ve benefited from great coaches I’ve had. I have learned a lot more with them than without them.”
The six-time grand Slam winner added: “Roger Federer is working with the same coach, Severin Luthi, from the beginning. Roger is working with Ljubicic and he has Edberg, but his first coach is the same guy.
“You have players like NIck Kyrgios saying a coach is overrated and a waste of money – he’s never won a grand slam, maybe he needs a coach,”
Kyrgios and Becker have had critical words on Twitter in recent months during the long COVID-19 lockdown period so it’s unlikely that his advice will be taken to heart.
