Boris Becker is providing resounding support for fellow German Alexander Zverev as the US Open begins next week, the veteran still cautious about his compatriot’s 2022 ankle drama.
Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Zverev missed the second half of last season after seriously injuring his ankle at Roland Garros.
And six-time Grand Slam winner Becker told a Eurosport podcast that he cringes inside each time he sees Sascha take risks on North American cement.
“When he slides into the corners on hard court it always breaks my heart,” Becker said. “I’m still thinking about his injury in the back of my mind.
“But he doesn’t anymore, otherwise he wouldn’t do it.”
Nevertheless, TV commentator Becker believes life on court is looking up for his compatriot.
“(He) is in top physical shape and has gotten over the long injury break. We will soon see Sascha Zverev again from two years ago”.
