Nicoloz Basilashvili blunted the effect of 10 aces from Stefanos Tsitsipas to upset the Greek second seed 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 on Friday for an Indian Wells Masters semi-final spot.
The Georgian who has never been so far at the Masters 1000 level, advanced to the final four in just over two hours, with Tsitsipas failing to save four of five break points against his serve.
The seed had won both of the pair’s previous matches, with Tsitsipas reaching the quarter-finals or better in six 6 of this year’s seven Masters events.
Basilashvili broke free at this edition in the Californian desert at a venue where he had never previously won a match. He now plays either third seed Alexander Zverev or Taylor Fritz for a place in the final.
Tsitsipas missed the chance for a semi-final at a third straight Masters tournament after Toronto and Cincinnati in August.
