A trio of US women began repairing weekend damage at Roland Garros with a mass move into the second round on Monday.
First-round victories from qualifier Kayla Day, Madison Keys and Bernarda Pera made up for four defeats on the men’s side on Sunday’s opening day in Paris.
Day, ranked 138, put out France’s former WTA No. 10 Kristina Mladenivic 7-5, 6-1, with the 2017 local quarter-finalist making an early exit at home.
The winner threw down six aces over her No. 166 opponent and broke four times in the 97 minute victory.
Keys, runner-up six years ago at the US Open and a semi-finalist here a year later, beat Kaia Kanepi 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.
The winning triumvirate was completed by Pera, who defeated former world NO. 2 Anett Kontaveit 7-6 (8), 6-2.
