Aussies on brink of elimination

After a nightmare start to their Davis Cup campaign that saw them lose to Croatia. Australia beat Hungary 2-1 in Turin on Saturday but still face elimination from the event.

The group winners and two best runners-up qualify for the quarter-finals of the 18 team tournament and with a 2-4 win-loss record, the Aussies look like going home.

Australia went 1-0 down when Zsombor Piros beat John Millman 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 before Alex de Minaur came through a three-hour match to beat Marton Fucsovics 7-5, 2-6, 7-6(2) and level the tie at 1-1.

The doubles pairing of Alex Bolt and John Peers then sealed the tie when they beat the Hungarian duo 6-3, 6-7(11), 6-3.

“It was a war of attrition [for de Minaur],” captain Lleyton Hewitt said.

“In doubles our boys were in control, but you never know in doubles. But I think we really deserved it.”
