Ons Jabeur earned the first WTA title for an Arab player as the Tunisian beat fourth seed Daria Kasatkina 7-5, 6-4 on Sunday at the Birmingham event.
The No. 24 triumphed after losing finals in Moscow, 2018 – a loss to Kasatkina – and Charleston in April.
“I’m so proud,” Jabeur said after winning in 90 minutes with five breaks of her Russian opponent’s serve from 10 chances.
“I’ve struggled a lot and lost a few tough finals. I was thinking that maybe I would lose again, cry and be disappointed.
“But I went for it and won. I hope this becomes an example, I’d like to see more Arab and Tunisian players out here with me.”
No. 35 Kastakina had won both of the pair’s previous meetings but missed out on a third WTA title this season after 2021 honours in Australia and Russia.
